Criminal Litigation Department
The diagram below shows how the new ILEX Level 3 units could be used by staff dealing with criminal litigation matters. The full unit names are listed below. We recommend that legal support staff start with the ILEX Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice (Criminal Litigation). ITC offers flexible learning courses for the units in the Certificate at a cost of £895. The Certificate can be readily achieved within one year. This recognised qualification shows understanding of criminal law and litigation at a level which would allow competent handling of straightforward client files. Those who wish to do so could continue studying and complete the Level 3 stage of their ILEX training in a further year.

Unit selection
The selection of courses for a Trainee Legal Executive to make up the ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice are illustrative, and there is some element of choice within the rules of combination set out in the 'How to be a legal executive' page. Students who have achieved the ILEX Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice (Criminal Litigation) would have to take Units 2, 4 and 5 to achieve their Diploma, plus either two practice subject which link with the core law subjects (ie Unit 9 Civil Litigation and Unit 10 Conveyancing), or an additional law subject and its linked to practice subject. We have recommended Unit 7 Family Law and Unit 12 the Practice of Family Law but other non-core law and linked practice subjects such as Wills and Succession and Probate Practice would also satisfy the rules.
Further courses
Legal Executive trainees who complete the ILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice will progress to the Level 6 stage of their training. Paralegals who have completed the ILEX Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice (Criminal Litigaion), who wish to gain more in-depth knowledge of their subject area without embarking on a professional qualification may wish to study for an ILEX Level 6 Single Subject Certificate in Criminal Law, or Criminal Litigation, or both.
