Who is the course for?
This ITC Specialist Course is designed for unqualified staff working in defendant personal injury departments of law firms as well as in insurance organisations. It is also suitable for qualified staff who wish to switch to defendant PI work or refresh knowledge in this area of practice. If you are a legal executive and this is not your area of specialism you can allocate 50% (8 hours) of your annual CPD requirement, or 100% if it is. If you are a solicitor you can allocate 75% (12 hours), which is the maximum available for CPD by distance learning under the SRA's rules. For the purposes of the SRA the course is at intermediate level.
What will I study?
The course is endorsed by the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL), with whom we have collaborated on the development of the syllabus. The course features aspects of civil litigation procedure in the context of a defendant personal injury matter. We recommend that you should also study the CILEx Level 3 Tort and Civil Litigation Units, unless you already have a solid background in personal injury litigation.
The Defendant Personal Injury Course covers road traffic accidents, trips and slips, accidents at work, workplace claims, use of independent experts, quantum, evidence of claimant's losses, working with insurers, tactical considerations, negotiation techniques, settling cases and costs. Course design
The course is delivered by blended learning, combining distance learning with on-line and telephone support. You can enrol at any time of year, and the enrolment period is for one year. | Reading & Study Assignments |
The assignment questions are designed to test your knowledge. Each assignment is split into questions where you will be asked to apply the law to different scenarios. Once completed, you send your assignments to your personal tutor for marking and comment. The marks for each assignment contribute towards the overall mark for the course. |
| Telephone Assistance |
ITC’s academic team are available during working hours to answer course-related academic queries as they arise. |
| Course Forum |
This is a web-based discussion board which can be accessed via the Student Area at any time. If you are having difficulty in understanding any topic you can pose a question to the tutors via the Forum. The postings from other students and the tutors’ replies also provide an excellent source of advice and study tips. Messages can be exchanged with fellow students on the ‘Chat’ area of the Forum. |

All ITC students must have access to a computer. Internet access and a personal email address are also essential. A specification is given here.
Assessment
ITC Specialist Courses are certificated by ITC - they are not examined by CILEx and do not contribute towards any CILEx qualification. The course is assessed by assignments submitted to ITC for marking. There is no exam. ITC will provide a certificate of completion to students who have passed the three assessed assignments.

Courses can be purchased through our on-line shop or through the course application form which can be downloaded below. The application form gives advice on fees and instalment options, as well as information on how to apply if your studies are being funded by your employer.
