What are the courses about?
These units will teach you some key skills for working in a legal environment. In Client Care you will learn how to behave during client meetings, how to take meeting notes, how to address clients in letters, as well as some of the Rules of Conduct that all those employed within the legal profession must comply with.
The Legal Research unit introduces you to the resources available to lawyers to ensure that the advice they give is factually correct and up to date, and teaches you how to extract and apply relevant information from these databases.
Professional skills workshops
Both professional skills courses are built around a face-to-face skills workshop. Workshops are delivered regionally and on a variety of dates. Although attendance is not mandatory, most students find that the workshops greatly improve their chances of passing the assessment first time. A £10 administration fee is payable at the time of booking.

Unit 16 further course resources
The key resources for the Client Care Skills unit, in addition to your course manual, are filmed client/practitioner interviews which are used to illustrate points covered by the Client Care syllabus. There are three films in total and you will select one to use for your Practice Assignment. These are available to view through the Student Area and a clip of the Civil Litigation film is available to view here.
Each of the three filmed interviews is accompanied by Discussion Points which highlight client care issues covered in the films. Once you have viewed your chosen film and worked through the Discussion Points you will be ready to do your Practice Assignment, which includes a number of tasks for you to work through and send to your ITC tutor for marking and comment. The tasks, and the feedback from your tutor, will prepare you for the Assessed Assignment set by ILEX. The filmed interview on which your assessment will be based is also made available through the Student Area. You will watch it and submit your Assignment to ITC for assessment. ITC will advise ILEX of your mark. You will also have access via the Student Area to the Legal Writing and Office Procedures modules of our Virtual Practitioner range of web-based learning resources.
Unit 17 further course resources
We have developed an electronic teaching programme, which you will access via the Student Area, to guide you through the Legal Research Skills syllabus. You will learn how to research Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and cases on the internet. The exercises are interactive and provide feedback on your performance as you work through the module. On completing the teaching programme, you will work through a Practice Assignment and submit it to your ITC personal tutor for marking and comment. You will use the LexisNexis Butterworths legal research database available through the Student Area to conduct your research. The research assignment, and your tutor’s feedback, will prepare you for the ILEX Assessed Assignment. The research exercise on which your ILEX Assessed Assignment will be based is also made available through the Student Area. You will submit your completed research report to ITC for assessment. ITC will advise ILEX of your mark.
Academic and administrative support
On-course support is available from our Academic Team by telephone during office hours, and our designated tutors on the course forums are on hand to help you with course queries.
