ILEX Level 6 professional skills courses

This section covers the courses offered by ITC to prepare you for the assessments set by ILEX for the Level 6 professional skills units - Unit 22 Client Care Skills and Unit 23 Legal Research Skills. The fee is £375 for each course. An application form for these courses is available at the foot of this page.

Who are the courses for?

These courses will prepare you for exams set by ILEX and are relevant if you:

- are studying the ILEX Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice - both Units are compulsory elements of this qualification

- are studying the ILEX Graduate Fast-track Diploma  - Unit 22 Client Care Skills is a compulsory element of this qualification

- wish to develop professional legal skills without studying for a full professional qualification. Success in both units leads to the award of an ILEX Level 6 Legal Skills Certificate

What are the courses about?

By completing the ILEX Level 6 Client Care Skills unit you will acquire essential business skills in telephone negotiation and complaints management. You select the context in which you wish to study your negotiation from three practice areas: Conveyancing, Civil Litigation or Family Practice. The course teaches you how to prepare for negotiation and introduces the BATNA theory (best alternative to a negotiated agreement).

Legal research skills are particularly important for practitioners, which is why the ILEX Level 6 Legal Research Skills unit teaches applied skills using books and web-based sources with the objective of resolving a client problem. The research tasks are based on seven practice areas, one of which you choose according to your own interest. The areas are:

  • Civil Litigation
  • Company and Partnership Practice
  • Conveyancing
  • Criminal Litigation
  • Employment Practice
  • Family Practice
  • Probate Practice

The research tasks will cover non-mainstream areas of law and practice which may go outside the areas covered in the ILEX Level 6 law and practice syllabi.

Course design – Unit 22 Client Care Skills

There are three courses to choose from, to reflect the practice areas offered by ILEX in the unit assessment - Conveyancing, Civil Litigation or Family Practice. The course is built around a face-to-face workshop and a specially-written manual on negotiation and complaints management, which is common to each of the three course variants. This is supplemented by material on professional ethics. Course materials include an introductory webcast, a 'client' case file and a practice assignment. The assignment is based on an audio file of a simulated telephone negotiation between a lawyer and his or her opponent. The exercise requires you to assess the effectiveness of the negotiation and complete follow-up tasks including writing an attendance note, drafting a letter and dealing with a subsequent complaint by the client. Your completed practice assignment is sent to your tutor for marking and comment before attempting the assessed assignment. The Client Care Skills course takes approximately  76 hours to complete including preparing and writing the practice and assessed assignments.

Course design – Unit 23 Legal Research Skills

There are seven courses to choose from, to reflect the practice areas offered by ILEX in the unit assessment as listed under 'What are the courses about?' above. The course is built around a face-to-face workshop and you will receive a printed course manual to guide you through the research process. On-line materials include an introductory webcast and an on-line legal database. Your course will include a practice assignment which will test your ability to advise a client on the basis of your research. This is sent to your tutor for marking and comment before attempting the assessed assignment. The Legal Research Skills course takes approximately 90 hours’ study.

Professional skills workshops

Workshops are delivered regionally and on a variety of dates.  Although attendance is not mandatory, it is strongly recommmended, and most students find that the workshops greatly improve their chances of passing the assessment first time.  A £10 administration fee is payable at the time of booking.
